Christmas at ONE&ALL 2024

Devotional Thought

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’ Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.’

-Luke 2:8-14

Christmas is a season of joy, yet for many, it brings a mixture of emotions. It invites reflection on peace—what it means and why it seems elusive in a broken world. The angel’s proclamation to the shepherds declared peace on earth, yet the backdrop of Jesus’ birth includes political unrest, personal struggles, and societal upheaval.

The peace Jesus brings isn’t mere absence of conflict but a profound, lasting reconciliation with God. This "peace on earth" transforms hearts, redefines justice, and reorders priorities. Through Jesus, we learn to live not just with hope for eternal peace but also to embody and share His peace amid trials today.

As we reflect on the birth of Christ, let us recognize the gift of a Savior who brings a peace that sustains us—both now and forever.

1. What does the angel's declaration of “peace on earth” mean in the context of Luke 2? How do you see this peace demonstrated in Jesus’ life and teachings?

2. How does the Christmas story challenge or affirm the way peace is pursued in our modern world?

3. Simeon predicted Jesus would bring both joy and division (Luke 2:34-35). How can we balance the peace Christ offers with the challenges of living faithfully in a divided world?

4. What steps can you take to reflect Christ's peace in your family, workplace, or community this holiday season?

5. How does the promise of a Savior who prepares a place for us (John 14:1-4) impact your view of peace during times of grief or uncertainty?

6. The shepherds shared the good news with those around them. How can you share the peace and hope of Christ with someone in need this week?

7. What are some ways you can express gratitude for the peace of Christ in your daily life? Consider incorporating prayer or worship into your routine.
