Roles Within Marriage
The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’
-Genesis 2: 18
But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
-Genesis 2:20b
So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.’ That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
-Genesis 2:21-25

THE ROLES WITHIN A MARRIAGE
WIVES:
Priority #1 - Think Submission, not Slavery
Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
-Ephesians 5:22-24
Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.
-1 Peter 3:1-2
Priority #2 - Think Devotion, not Duty
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
-Ephesians 5:21
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her…
-Ephesians 5:25
HUSBANDS:
Priority #1 – Think Dedication, not Dominance
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.
-Ephesians 5:25-27
In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church--for we are members of his body.
-Ephesians 5:28-30
Priority #2 – Think Sacrifice, not Selfishness
However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
-Ephesians 5:33
A man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
-Genesis 2:24
Commitment is making a choice to give up other choices.
