‘Where is Sarah, your wife?’ the visitors asked. ‘She’s inside the tent,’ Abraham replied. Then one of them said, ‘I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!’ Sarah was listening to this conversation from the tent. So she laughed silently to herself and said, ‘How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my master—my husband—is also so old?’ Abraham and Sarah were both very old by this time, and Sarah was long past the age of having children. Sarah was afraid, so she denied it, saying, ‘I didn’t laugh.’ But the Lord said, ‘No, you did laugh.’
-Genesis 18:9-15
Who is this son and why is he so important?
But my covenant will be confirmed with Isaac, who will be born to you and Sarah about this time next year.
-Genesis 17:21
Similarities between Jesus & Isaac:
Both were announced or prophesied by divine or angelic beings.
Both were born under miraculous circumstances.
Both Isaac and Jesus represented Covenants.
Both would bring joy.
We see some of the Origins of God’s salvation for all humanity were started with the promise of Isaac and fulfilled in Jesus. We can see God weaving His story throughout the Bible.
Sarah’s Laugh:
‘Where is Sarah, your wife?’ the visitors asked. ‘She’s inside the tent,’ Abraham replied. Then one of them said, ‘I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!’ Sarah was listening to this conversation from the tent. So she laughed silently to herself and said, ‘How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my master—my husband—is also so old?’
-Genesis 18:9-12
Sarah’s Laugh is called Laughter of Incredulity: It is the state of being unwilling or unable to believe something.
Laughing at someone’s statement because it is incredible suggests a degree of scorn and mockery.
Two revolutionaries were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. ‘Ha! Look at you now!’ they yelled at him. ‘You said you were going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days. Well then, save yourself and come down from the cross!’ The leading priests and teachers of religious law also mocked Jesus. ‘He saved others,’ they scoffed, ‘but he can’t save himself! Let this Messiah, this King of Israel, come down from the cross so we can see it and believe him!’ Even the men who were crucified with Jesus ridiculed him.
-Mark:15:27-32
Sarah looked at her weakness- her old age, her husband’s old age and immediately dismissed what God said.
The chief priests and elders saw a weak, defeated man on the cross and dismissed that He was God and that God was doing something - Fulfilling what He had said; bring all of humanity to Himself.
Inevitable comes from the Latin word inevitabilis, which means unavoidable. If you say something is inevitable, you give the sense that no matter what scheme you come up with to get around it, it will happen sooner or later.
Then the Lord said to Abraham, ‘Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘Can an old woman like me have a baby?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.’
-Genesis 18:13-14
“Difficult /hard ” in Hebrew here in this passage means - beyond wonderful, astonishing, supernatural.
He is inevitable.
The mind which asks for a non-miraculous Christianity is a mind in the process of relapsing from Christianity into mere religion.
-C.S. Lewis - Miracles
God is inevitable - nothing is going to stop God from achieving what He desires.
God is inevitable because He is sovereign. He will accomplish His good plan for us personally if we live according to His will, and He will accomplish His plan for the world whether we like it or not.
1 - Non-Christian: You have to decide what to do with Jesus.
He defeated death the one thing no one has ever defeated; the thing so powerful and absolute that greek gods even claimed they couldn’t reverse.
-Mark Clark
And there will be strange signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth, for the powers in the heavens will be shaken. So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near! Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud with power and great glory.
-Luke 21:25-28
And I saw a great white throne and the one sitting on it. The earth and sky fled from his presence, but they found no place to hide. I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books. Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death. The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave gave up their dead. And all were judged according to their deeds. And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.
-Revelation 20:11-15
IT IS INEVITABLE
Are you ready to stand before God?
2 - Christian: Choose faith to experience God’s Wonder
There is joy and wonder when you step out in faith and operate in the power God has given you.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
-Act 1:8
He will work through us in spite of our weaknesses.
IT IS INEVITABLE
3 - Grace is available
It was by faith that even Sarah was able to have a child, though she was barren and was too old. She believed that God would keep his promise.
-Hebrews 11:11
Part of grace is that God will confront your unbelief so that you will see.
Still later he appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating together. He rebuked them for their stubborn unbelief because they refused to believe those who had seen him after he had been raised from the dead.
-Mark 16:14
Solution: Pray for Faith.
‘…But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!’ But Jesus said to him, ‘If You can?’ All things are possible for the one who believes.’ Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, ‘I do believe; help my unbelief!’
-Mark 9:22b-24
