In Acts 2, devout Jews arrived in Jerusalem from all over the known world to celebrate Passover and Pentecost. During the celebrations, those in attendance witnessed something supernatural that would change many of them forever.
We hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!
-Acts 2:11b
These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. This man was handed over to you by God's deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.
-Acts 2:15-36
They devoted themselves to the apostles; teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.
-Acts 2:42-43
All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. ... And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
-Acts 2:44-45, 47b
What happened in Jerusalem did not stay in Jerusalem.
What is our human tendency? To think more highly of ourselves than we ought, to hang out with people who are like us, or people higher than you so that they can pull you up a rung or two on the ladder.
The ground is level at the foot of the cross.
Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For, 'All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.' And this is the word that was preached to you.
-1 Peter 1:22-25
A community formed whose characteristics were as follows:
1. They accepted each other, regardless of race, language or socio-economic standing.
2. They stopped viewing life as a competition and everyone else as the opposition.
Accept one another just as Christ accepted you.
-Romans 15:7
Clothe yourself with humility toward one another.
-1 Peter 5:5
Carry one another's burdens and thus fulfill the law of Christ.
-Galatians 6:2
To carry a burden that is too heavy, you must come very close to a burdened person.
3. They did not see their possessions as their own but rather embraced community by sharing whatever they had.
4. They possessed the spiritual discipline of paying attention to People.
Because of the idols and habits of our hearts, church events simply become places that individuals 'focus on themselves in the presence of others.' It takes deep reflection and costly commitment to live in community.
