Raising Faith in Tough Times
These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you. Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
-Deuteronomy 6:1-9 (NIV)
In Deuteronomy, Moses emphasizes the importance of instilling God's commandments in our hearts and diligently teaching them to our children. This passage highlights the integral role of parents in nurturing their children's faith. It underscores the need for consistent teaching, not just through words but through daily actions and practices that reflect our love and reverence for God.
Our culture presents numerous challenges to raising children in the faith. Secular influences and conflicting messages about morality and truth can easily sway young minds. However, the biblical mandate remains clear: parents are to be the primary educators of their children's faith. This involves not only teaching them about God but also demonstrating what it means to live a life devoted to Him.
Raising children in the faith means more than just attending church; it's about creating a home environment where God's presence is felt and His teachings are lived out daily. As parents, we must be intentional in our efforts to guide our children towards a personal relationship with Jesus, helping them to understand and embrace the truths of the Bible. By doing so, we equip them with the spiritual foundation needed to navigate life's challenges and remain steadfast in their faith.
