I AM the Resurrection

Devotional Thought

 Jesus wept.

-John 11:35

In one of the most tender and surprising moments in the Gospels, we see the eternal Son of God—Jesus—standing at the tomb of a friend. He knows resurrection is moments away. He knows Lazarus’ story is not over. And still, Jesus weeps.

Why? Because even when the outcome is secure, the pain of the moment is real. This moment teaches us something deeply important: the God we follow is not distant or dispassionate. He is the God who holds both truth and tears.

With Martha, Jesus brings truth—"I am the resurrection and the life." He strengthens her faith with promises and theology. But with Mary, Jesus brings tears. He doesn’t offer an explanation. He offers presence. Grief. Compassion.

We need both. In seasons of suffering and silence, we need to remember that Jesus delays not because He doesn’t care—but because He sees the bigger picture. He is forming eternity in us. And while we wait, He stays with us.

Jesus is the undisputed Champion of the universe. He’s powerful enough to raise the dead—and loving enough to sit and weep with you first.

Reflection Questions

1. Have you ever felt like Jesus didn’t show up “on time” in your life? What did that waiting season look like, and how did it affect your view of God?

2. Martha received truth. Mary received tears. Which response do you find yourself needing more in this season—truth or tears?

3. Jesus delayed intentionally so the disciples would believe. How might God be using a delay in your life to deepen your trust or faith?

4. Jesus weeps with those who weep. What does this tell us about how we should respond to the pain of others in our community?

5. Jesus showed anger at the tomb—raging against death and sin. How does righteous anger have a place in the Christian life? What might it look like?

6. Which side do you lean toward—fixing with truth or comforting with tears? How can you grow in giving others what they actually need in moments of pain?

7. John 11 points to resurrection not just as an event, but a Person. What does it mean to you personally that Jesus is the resurrection and the life?

8. In your pain, do you feel more comfortable running from God or toward Him? Why do you think that is? How can you take a step closer this week?
